Although the gay marriage legislation may have failed, supporters of medical marijuana won big in New Jersey as the state became the 14th state to legalize the practice. While not decriminalizng the drug, it will allow those with chronic diseases such as AIDS, cancer, and Lou Gehrig's disease to have controlled amounts given to them by the state. The decision is coming from Governor Jon Corzine just days before giving leadership to opponent of medical marijuana, Governor-Elect Chris Christie. Christie in others point to California as an example of medical marijuana gone out of control but New Jersey's requirements for obtaining the treatment appear to be much stricter than that of California's. Despite potential reservations, the bill based relatively easily in the General Assembly and State Senate.
Do you guys feel that this is a slippery slope towards more drug abuse or merely providing patients with needed relief?

I don't think legal medical marijuana will create a greater drug problem in the US. First of all, legal and illegal drugs are abused in this country. Secondly, if the doctors do their jobs the drug will only be in the hands of those who truly need it. Lastly, drugs purchased illegally involve dangerous people and are potentially laced or cut with other things, which in a well-controlled, legal market would not be the case!
ReplyDeleteI don't think the slope can get more slippery. Some people argue that America already has a drug problem.If marijuana was leglized, all the problems(crimes) that come with obtaning marijuana illegaly would go down.
ReplyDeleteAmerica already abuses drugs--both legalized and illegal. I don't think simply legalizing marijuana, which will not be spiked with anything, will remarkably change this disposition. However if doctors do not approach this situation ethically, and they prescribe marijuana left and right for monetary reasons then it will become a problem.
